Jim Furyk set to be named Team USA captain for 2018 Ryder Cup ahead of Fred Couples




Couples, having appeared in the competition five times as a player, was one of the names mooted to succeed 2016 captain Davis Love III.

But the Press Association claim Furyk is the preferred candidate of the committee, which included Love, Phil Mickelson and .

Furyk is a veteran of 30 matches and was one of Love’s vice-captains when the US thrashed Europe 17-11 at Hazeltine in October.

“It really helped to be an assistant for Davis,” Furyk said last month.

“Any time you can do this, you're learning.

“You're going to make some mistakes, you're going to do some things right.



“We did a lot of good things that week.

“We made some mistakes, and we'll learn from them and keep building on the system.”

The 2018 edition will be held at Le Golf National near Paris, the first time the Ryder Cup has been held in France.

Team USA produced a brilliant weekend of golf to win the Ryder Cup in 2016

Europe have not lost on home soil for 25 years since Team USA triumphed at The Belfry in 1993.

The hosts have already appointed their captain - Thomas Bjorn will be in charge of winning back the Ryder Cup for Europe.

The Dane has played in the competition three times (1997, 2002 & 2014) and has never lost, a record he will be keen to maintain in September 2018.
